Petanu
River:
Petanu river is born on the hills of Tampak Siring in
central Bali. Fed by Tirtha Empul Holy Spring dated at
least from X century as mentioned in the stone
inscription kept in the nearby Mengening temple. The
springs and the river are considered sacred by people
since a legend tells its origin which was created by Indra, God of storm and rains who helped the Balinese
people to destroy evil king Mayadenawa after a fierce
battle. To revive the dead warriors, Indra created the
holy spring. The site is only 20 minute drive from the
bungalows.
Goa Gajah (elephant
Cave)
"Goa Gajah" or Elephant cafe is an ancient hermitage
dated from XI century, built on the banks of the sacred Petanu River,
previously called "the elephant river," it was mentioned in Negarakertagama, a historical book from XIII century.
Relics found inside and around the cave have Buddhist
characters from VIII Century and Hindu legacy from XI
century, two religions lived side by side in harmony and
later merged into Hindu Balinese religion today. Only 5
minutes drive from our bungalows.
Yeh Pulu Reliefs
This mysterious reliefs dated from XIV century lies in
the midst of rice fields depicting the daily life of
Balinese people at the time. Contrary to the works of
art of that time which usually describe the life of Gods
and royalty, Yeh Pulu reliefs exposed scenes of common
people. The site only 5 minutes drive from our
bungalows.
Durga Kutri
This temple dated from XI century was built to
honour queen Mahendradatta, the spouse of king Udayana. The
view from the temple is superb as it was built on the
top of a hill, surrounded by verdant ricefileds and lush
vegetation. An old statue depicting the triumphant
goddess Durga riding a raging bull known as Durga Mahisa
Suramardini
which symbolizes The Triumphant Mahendradatta adorns the temple.
This site is only 10 minutes drive from our property.
Bona Bamboo Furniture
Factory
Bona, a tiny but beautiful village on the main way
to Gianyar is a center of Bamboo furniture and
handicrafts where you will find lovely things on
affordable prices. A set of living room big bamboo with
cushion will cost you US$ 400 only. Come and buy chairs,
sofas, tables, bamboo tray, bamboo lamps etc. Bona is
about 15 minutes drive from our property.
Gianyar Ikat Weavers
Gianyar the capital of Gianyar regency where the
bungalows also belong is also the place where to try the
best suckling pig or babi guling in the island. Gianyar
is also famous for its handmade Ikat "weft" cloths
produced by expert artisans on the outskirts of the city
hand made by old age
technique passed from mother to daughter from generation
to generation. Gianyar is only 15 minutes drive from our
bungalows.
Samuan Tiga Temple
In this lovely temple took place a very important
meeting in the X century between Mpu Kuturan, the
king's advisor and court priest and the representation of
several religious sects existing in Bali at that time. The participants agreed to accept concept of Balinese
traditional village proposed by Mpu Kuturan, namely in
every Balinese village it's compulsory to have at least
three village temples honouring Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva
respectively. Only 5 minutes drive from our premises.
Penataran Sasih Temple
Around 10 minutes drive from our property, you will
discover Penataran Sasih temple ("the court yard of moon
temple"), famous for its 2300 year old prehistoric drum.
According to Balinese legend, in old times there were
two moons in the sky which made a powerful thief
frustrated since he could not do his nightly work. The
thief then flied to urinate on the moon to extinguish
its light, the moon exploded and killed the thief. The
moon fell to the ground and then kept inside of this
"The Courtyard of Moon" temple.
Kebo Edan Temple
The temple bears the characters of an extinct sect
flourished in Bali during 13th century, namely Bhairawa
sect which try to obtain moksa through the practises of
matsya (eating fish), mamsa (eating meat) mada (being
drunken) and maithuna (orgy sex practise). At that time Bali
was conquered by king Kertanegara of Singasari
Kingdom in Java and Kebo Parud was appointed as vassal
king of Bali. Kertanegara himself was one of the prominent
members of this sect.
Gunung Kawi
The east Javanese style royal commemorative tombs dated
from X and XI century bears the old inscription "Haji
Lumah ing Jalu" that indicates the tomb of King Udayana,
the most famous Balinese king in old time. "Rwa Anakira"
was written on other tombs which were dedicated to his
sons and predecessors, Marakata and Anak Wungsu. Other
tombs were of his spouse, queen Mahendradatta, his
concubines and his prime minister. |
